Steam ebook with lesson plans in 6 different languages

Our Erasmus plus KA 229 project  - ‘We are creating STEAM embassies in the European partner network’ promoted STEAM education and focussed on reducing failure or drop out rates in Science and maths in schools.

We encouraged STEAM subjects among teachers and students, improved their competencies, and changed their outlook. This was an educational approach that aimed to transform theoretical knowledge into practice, product and innovative inventions. We looked into the Science, Maths, Technology and Arts curriculum (for ex.LGR11 From Sweden) from each partner country to incorporate necessary objectives in our project activities. We developed the 21st century skills of creativity, scientific thinking, algorithmic thinking, critical thinking, problem solving, flexible thinking, aesthetic skills, design skills, sustainability  and risk taking that form the basis of innovative research.

There were 6 schools from 6 countries involved in the project - Sweden,Ireland, Romania,Turkey, Italy and Latvia who communicated in English promoting english language skills in a scientific setup. The students and teachers participated in mobilities across countries and then shared project activities in our respective school communities and on the etwinning forum for further dissemination building STEAM culture.

Charlotte Dunnell, a 6th grader from IES Kista was fascinated to talk about her favourite Steam Club, ‘I liked the STEAM club because it was fun being able to try new things and to learn about science, technology and math in a different way. I particularly enjoyed the parachute project and building the roller coaster. It was fun working with my friends in the club.’  The individual projects involved hands-on, problem solving activities for learning which is published in the form of an ebook for further use by the educational community. This ebook is written mainly in English but the main lesson plans are also translated in 5 other languages.

Ms Urmimala Banerjee, Coordinator of the project from Sweden says, ‘This project made us more open minded, culturally aware across borders while sharing good practices. We all grew professionally and academically, gained knowledge about Steam using digital skills and hope it will reduce the Stem skill gap in the European continent in future’.

Our project activities has been published as an ebook  at in 6 different languages for further dissemination.

Virtual STEAM activities organized by Latvian and Italian partners.

March 2021 was a big challenge for our project due to the limitations of the Corona virus. We had to find new solutions to continue the activities and achieve the project goals. As all flights were banned, the Latvian and Italian partners organized virtual activities for the other project partners on the Google meet platform.

In December 2021, latvian partners offered to go on a virtual trip around the world, putting the STEAM experience in a suitcase.

We visited ancient Egypt and built a pyramid of toothpicks, calculating its area and performing other engineering and mathematical activities. We also went to the Great Wall of China and built our zip line from one tower to the next. We also visited ancient Mesopotamia and learned coding by writing in cuneiform.

The Italian activities took place under the sign of the Italian genius Leonardo da Vinci.
The STEAM focus area of the Italian partners  was Art.
We created a self-portrait of Mona Lisa. We also found out what a perspectograph is and stated it. We got into Leonardo's skin and built a parachute. One of the most amazing activities was mirror-writing.! The cherry on the cake was self-made volcano Etna, using soda, vinegar and other ingredients. It really erupted!

Project mobility at Smiltene Secondary school, Latvia.

From 2 to 6 March, Smiltene Secondary School carried out activities within the Erasmus + project “We are creating STEAM embassies in the European School Network”, Strategic Partnership Erasmus plus KA229 Project 2018-2020.

The project started with the Latvian, Swedish, Irish, Romanian, Turkish and Italian national anthems. Pupils got acquainted with the video produced by each partner about their school.

As Smiltene Secondary School emphasized mathematics in this project, the first activity was about slope measurements. The students made their slope meter from the CD case. Then everyone went outside and made a measurement. After they returned to school and calculated the length of inaccessible objects. Students also used their engineering skills and designed a useful structure from the particular object.

In the next activity, mathematics met chemistry. Students from the school’s Chemistry club carried out various experiments and the project participants had to answer the questions they had prepared. Later, at six stations, students improved their knowledge of chemistry and mathematics.

The students also made their hologram device and built ships with the highest carrying capacity. At the end of the project, the students visited the ZINOO Science Centre to learn about the Morse code. The event was crowned by the Math fair.

As the project had to deal with force majeure related to the spread of Coronavirus in Europe, all project activities will be carried out through virtual mobility. For the partner schools, all lesson plans and worksheets are prepared in the e-twinning platform so that each school can carry out the planned activities. A videoconference will be held later to allow the project partners to discuss the results achieved.

Steam club celebrations - one year culmination of the project 'We are creating Steam embassies'.

It has been a wonderful year working at the steam club at IES Kista. We did projects like Shelter project, went for science trips to teklafestival or tekniska museum, did experiments with eggs, build rollercoasters or balloon towers. We celebrated one year culmination by hosting a steam event at school.Senior steam club students are IES Kista created a video on Erasmas plus and how Steam club works. Junior steam club students created a video on various projects the club was involved throughout the year. A special thanks to all teachers, administrators, parents and students of IES Kista for being so supportive throughout. Team Kista rocks!!Cheers for Steam club !!

Raising awareness of environmental issues in Romania

From 22 to 28 September, partners of the Erasmus + project “We Are Creating STEAM Embassies in the European School Network” visited Gheorghe Magheru school, in Caracal City, Romania.

The theme of this mobility was ecology and environmental issues.

The first day of mobility started with ice-breaking activities, then we were introduced to the school and visited the classrooms. All the children and teachers were very kind and welcoming.

In the evening, we met at the opening ceremony at the National Theatre. The national anthems of the project’s countries were recorded and short videos of partner schools were presented. The ceremony was crowned with a wonderful cultural programme of national Romanian music and dance.

On Tuesday, students went to a paper-recycling workshop to make new paper out of waste paper, to learn about printing history, and to test their printing skills with ancient printing machines. We also visited the Museum of Handicrafts. The day was continued with sports activities and we tried the zip–line in a scenic place.

On Wednesday, pupils planted trees on the land of Romania. We also made and decorated candleholders from recycled materials.

The evening ended with a cultural event with songs, dances, games, smiles, energy and delicious Romanian food. We were pleasantly surprised by the Romanian hospitality and rich cultural heritage.

On Thursday, we visited the Science Museum and participated in biology workshops on biodiversity and natural habitats for animals. We also saw the majestic Carpathian mountains in Transylvania.

On Friday, we created a dream country model and presented it to other partners. The day was followed by a ceremony of awarding certificates.

This is the fourth mobility in the project.

In March 2020, the project partners will be welcomed at Smiltene Secondary School, Latvia, which will focus on mathematics.
